Crisis Prevention and Preparedness: Comprehensive School Safety Planning

This 1-day workshop provides school mental health professionals, administrators, security officers, and other educators the knowledge and resources important to establishing and maintaining comprehensive, ongoing school safety and crisis prevention, mitigation, and preparedness. Making use of existing personnel, resources and programs, PREPaRE can be adapted to an individual school's needs and size. Specific attention is given to developing, exercising, and evaluating safety/crisis teams and plans, and integrating school and community crisis personnel. Also addressed are issues associated with media, special needs students, culture, technology, and memorials. Training reinforces improved school climate, student behavior and academic functioning, student resilience, and school staff crisis response capabilities.   

  • Provides a broad overview of the school crisis team's roles and responsibilities, with a special emphasis on crisis prevention and preparedness
  • Participants will learn the following (objectives):
    • characteristics of a crisis event
    • missions areas of crisis preparedness: prevention, protection, mitigation, response, recovery
    • three concepts related to crime prevention through environmental design
    • four elements related to promoting psychological safety
    • purpose of and how to establish a comprehensive safety team and plan
    • purpose of and how to establish a multidisciplinary crisis team and plan
    • difference between crisis team response plan and the school staff response plan
    • three strategies for examining effectiveness of crisis prevention and preparedness 
Who should receive Workshop 1 training? PREPaRE Workshop 1 is appropriate for all school personnel who need to understand how the comprehensive school crisis team is organized and functions. This can include but is not limited to school mental health professionals, administrators, teachers, other student services personnel, security officers, front office staff, transportation directors, and before and after school activities coordinators.   Trainers: Dr. Stephen E. About the PREPaRE Training Curriculum: 

The PREPaRE curriculum has been developed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) as part of NASP's decade-long leadership in providing evidence-based resources and consultation related to school crisis prevention and response. PREPaRE training is ideal for schools committed to improving and strengthening their school safety and crisis management plans and emergency response.


It includes two core workshops:

Workshop 1 - Crisis Prevention and Preparedness: Comprehensive School Safety Planning (Provides a broad overview of the school safety and crisis team's roles and responsibilities, with a special emphasis on crisis prevention and preparedness) 

Workshop 2 - Crisis Intervention and Recovery: The Roles of School-Based Mental Health Professionals (Provides a specific examination of the school-based mental health professionals' roles and responsibilities, with a special emphasis on crisis intervention and recovery)
